Gyotaku: Japanese for fish rubbing, is an art developed by Japanese fisherman hundreds of years ago to record the size of their catch.
A real fish is taken and paint is applied to the skin. A piece of paper or fabric is then put on top and the fish is carefully rubbed all over. The paper is peeled off and a very realistic impression of the fish is left behind. The eye is then hand painted and a traditional red Japanese seal is applied to the corner of the artwork. This is a modern, alternative approach to taxidermy. Custom pieces can be commissioned.
